Chapter 2
We’re working through Chapter 2 of What Happened to You and the topic is Seeking Balance. This chapter further focuses on how we move ourselves from feeling bad to feeling good, or – in the language of the book – from being disregulated to being regulated. The actions that we take to move ourselves into a regulated state matter because the the things that make us feel good – or regulated – are not always the things that will help us to thrive. In fact, if we have experienced trauma then the things that make us feel regulated might actually be bad for us. In this episode we talk through how the work of cutting out actions that make us feel regulated but keep us from thriving is the work that helps us to heal.
Chapter 1
In this episode we work through Chapter 1 of What Happened to You? by Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Bruce Perry. The chapter is titled Making Sense of the World and it focuses on the crucial, early stages in a child’s development and the lifelong impacts that traumatic events cause when they occur during that time.
We explore the intersection of our brains, how our brains process information, and how traumatic events can stick with us long after the circumstances surrounding those events have passed.
Introduction
It’s time to level up! As we work to deepen our conversations with our friends, family, and community – it’s important to consider the experiences that other people are bringing into the conversation with them. As the host of Bottomless Coffee, I want to be able to bring in a trauma-informed approach to every conversation that calls for it. So – I turned to Oprah.
Oprah Winfrey partnered with brain development and trauma expert Dr. Bruce D. Perry to write What Happened to You? A book that works to shift the way that we think about people who have experienced trauma.
We will work through the book and reflect on its lessons. And by the end, we will all know more about trauma, how it might manifest in our networks, and how we can help to heal the trauma within ourselves and help others resolve the trauma that they carry within themselves.
